What people look for on an artist’s website

Someone who looks you up wants to see the work first: paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, whatever you make. Then they want to know who you are and how to ask you for a piece. Your site shows photos or scans of your own work, each with the caption you type, and at the bottom anyone can send you a message about a commission. A stock image or anyone else’s work never goes on it.

Can I see your work?
Photos or scans of your own work in the gallery, from 2 up to 24 pieces. Under each one goes what you type: the title, the medium, the size or the year. One piece can also hang large at the top beside your name.
What do you make?
What you do, one line per subject: paintings, murals, book illustration, workshops. A price only appears where you type one.
Who is the artist?
A part about you in the first person: where you work and what you work with. Exhibitions, galleries or prizes you don’t name are never written in.
Can I ask for a commission?
A message form at the bottom, or your email address set large if you’d rather turn the form off. People write what they’re after, and the message lands in your email. Price, timing and payment you agree with them yourself.

Questions from artists

How does my work get on the site?

You photograph or scan it and upload the files yourself: while you build the site, under "Add your own photos" (you sign in with your email address for that), or later in your account under Photos. A file needs at least 800 pixels on its long side, and your account holds up to 30 photos at a time. When you upload, you confirm the rights are yours.

Can I sell my work or prints through the site?

No. There is no shop and no print sales, and nobody pays through your site. Someone who wants to buy a piece or commission one sends you a message through the form; you sort out the price and the payment with them yourself.

Is my work shown in high resolution?

No. Each file becomes web versions up to 1600 pixels wide, and we don’t keep the original. Data inside the file, such as a copyright line, is removed, and we add no watermark. If you want your name in the image, put it there before you upload. Anything on the web can be saved by someone.

I’m an illustrator. Does this design suit me too?

Yes. The example on this page is a made-up illustrator. List what you draw, such as book covers or cards, and show your drawings in the gallery.

Art is my living. Do I order as a business?

You choose that at checkout, where a business sees the prices without VAT as well. The design stays the same: your site talks about you and your work, never like a shop.

One price a year. Domain and hosting included.

First year €67.76 incl. VAT (€56 excl. VAT), then €43.56 a year (€36 excl. VAT). You only pay once you’ve seen your website and approved it. Want to stop? Your domain name stays yours and you can download your website as a zip. The domain name: a new one (.eu, .com, .nl, .be, .fr or .at) registered in your name, or one you already own.
